Indian Railways recorded significant growth in freight transportation and passenger connectivity during August 2026, with freight loading reaching 137.9 million tonnes compared to 130.9 million tonnes in August 2025.
The 5.4 per cent year-on-year increase reflects continued demand from key sectors of the economy, while freight revenue grew by 6.27 per cent over the same period.
During the month, Indian Railways regularised 14 Amrit Bharat services, bringing the total number of these affordable long-distance trains to 86.
The newly regularised services connect major cities and regional centres across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and other parts of the country, providing passengers with more travel options and improved connectivity between urban centres and regional destinations.
The expansion of freight infrastructure continued with five new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals being commissioned in August, taking the cumulative number to 149 as of 31 August 2026.
