In a bid to ensure that tourism infrastructure development picks up seriously before the National Games 2027, Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K. Sangma has introduced an innovative subsidy plan for homestays in Meghalaya, as announced at the Land Handover ceremony of the proposed Holiday Inn Resort Tura. This subsidy plan will provide a whopping 70 percent subsidy to those who wish to set up sports hostel-style homestays. This was introduced by the Department of Tourism, aiming to ensure that accommodation bottlenecks are addressed during the National Games.

This homestay scheme is part of the efforts to improve the tourism sector in Meghalaya. This scheme provides an alternative to the hotel industry, and in this regard, there are opportunities to promote sustainable tourism and also provide locals with gainful work. Chief Minister Sangma has explained that not only will this scheme provide more opportunities for tourists in terms of accommodations, but there will also be an improvement in the tourism sector as a whole, especially in the Garo hills.

Impact of the Homestay Subsidy on Meghalaya’s Tourism Landscape

The introduction of this homestay subsidy is expected to have a profound impact on Meghalaya’s tourism sector, particularly in the lead-up to the National Games 2027. By subsidizing the creation of sports hostels, the government is enabling local communities to participate in tourism at a grassroots level, creating opportunities for small-scale entrepreneurs to enter the tourism business.

This initiative aligns with the state’s vision of making Meghalaya a competitive tourism destination in the Northeast, offering a mix of high-end accommodations alongside community-based tourism options. This diversification will enable the state to cater to a wider range of tourists, from those seeking luxurious stays to those preferring more intimate, culturally immersive experiences.

Major Infrastructure Upgrades to Support Tourism Growth

In addition to the homestay schemeChief Minister Sangma outlined several infrastructure upgrades aimed at making Meghalaya more accessible and attractive to tourists. The planned runway expansion at Shillong Airport will enhance air connectivity, making it easier for tourists to visit the state. Similarly, the Tura Airport will undergo a ₹50-crore repair and revival, which is expected to bring UDAN operations to the region, facilitating affordable air travel and opening up Meghalaya to a broader market.

These infrastructure improvements are key to boosting Meghalaya’s tourism economy, as better connectivity will encourage both domestic and international tourists to visit the region. The heliport development, a new IT park, and the construction of a medical college further contribute to making the state more tourism-friendly by enhancing overall facilities for travelers and locals alik
