OPINION | National Infrastructure Pipeline: Project addition dips in FY2026, but pipeline value remains elevated

SHARE:

India’s ambitious National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), launched in 2019, has undergone a significant transformation in both scale and composition over the past seven years. As of March 2026, the NIP comprises approximately 14,563 projects, more than double the 6,835 projects at inception in 2019. Correspondingly, total projected investment has risen by nearly 92%, reaching about Rs. 213 trillion from Rs. 111 trillion in 2019.

The evolution of NIP has not been limited to scale alone. The framework has expanded structurally from a narrow list of sectors to a diversified portfolio spanning 33 sectors and 79 sub-sectors as of March 2026. This widening of coverage has enhanced visibility for investors and aligned infrastructure development more closely with India’s long-term development priorities, including logistics efficiency, energy security, urbanisation and sustainabili…

Logistics infrastructure continues to dominate, with cumulative investments reaching approximately Rs. 86 trillion, accounting for nearly 40% of total NIP investments. Roads and highways under logistics infrastructure, alone constitute about a quarter of the total NIP outlay, highlighting the sustained policy thrust on improving connectivity and reducing logistics costs.

Energy and power investments have remained broadly stable at around 18% of total NIP investments. Within this segment, electricity generation continues to lead, though cumulative investments have moderated, pointing to phased execution and selective capacity addition rather than rapid expansion. Notably, oil and gas investments increased their share, reflecting renewed emphasis on midstream and downstream infrastructure such as refineries, oil and gas pip…

However, while cumulative investments have grown, net order inflows for roads and highways declined sharply in FY2026, indic…
