The Department of Space has given the go-ahead for setting up shared technical facilities in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu as part of a broader push to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity in the space sector, officials said on Friday (22 May), Businessline reported.
The proposed facilities will house high-end testing, validation and integration infrastructure, enabling private industry to access capital-intensive systems without bearing the full cost individually.
IN-SPACe, the space sector regulator, will oversee the procurement, installation and commissioning of the technical infrastructure. The body will also operate the facilities for a defined period before transferring ownership to the respective state governments.
Pawan Kumar Goenka, Chairman of IN-SPACe, underlined the significance of the initiative. “Realisation of space system requires capital-intensive facilities. The establishment of common technical facilities equipped with capital-intensive systems is a critical step in creating a robust, industry-led space ecosystem in India,” he said.
Both Gujarat and Tamil Nadu have already identified land for dedicated plug-and-play manufacturing clusters focused exclusively on space-related activities.
The shared technical facilities will come up within these clusters, providing ready-to-use infrastructure for companies looking to set up or scale operations in the sector.
