New Delhi: NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) for formation of a joint venture company to develop nuclear power projects in the country.
The agreement has been signed on Monday between NLCIL’s Director (Power) Venkatachalam and NPCIL’s Director (Technical) Rajesh in the presence of NLCIL CMD Prasanna Kumar Motupalli and NPCIL CMD Bhuwan Chandra Pathak along with senior officials of both companies.
Under the partnership, the proposed joint venture will develop 700 MW Indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR)-based nuclear power projects and other reactor technologies of suitable capacities based on mutually agreed terms. The collaboration will also explore investment opportunities in NPCIL’s existing and upcoming 700 MW PHWR projects.
The development comes as India targets achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 to support the country’s long-term energy transition and climate commitments.
NLCIL said the initiative gains further significance following the enactment of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Bill in December 2025, aimed at modernising the legislative and policy framework governing the nuclear sector.
NLCIL, a Navratna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, has been expanding beyond conventional power generation into renewable and green energy segments, including solar, wind, pumped hydro storage, battery energy storage systems, green hydrogen and waste-to-energy projects.
While, NPCIL is engaged in the design, construction and operation of nuclear power plants in India.
