The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a Rs 425.50 crore initiative to procure 250 new air-conditioned electric buses for the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC).
Finance Minister Suresh Khanna announced that the fleet will comprise 100 12-metre, 50-seater buses and 150 12-metre, 42-seater buses.
The state government will allocate Rs 400 crore for the financial year 2026-27, whilst UPSRTC will contribute the remaining Rs 25.50 crore from its own resources.
The procurement process will prioritise manufacturers based in Uttar Pradesh. The move comes as environmental regulations tighten across the National Capital Region.
Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh emphasised that the new electric buses would enable UPSRTC to comply with these norms within the prescribed timeline, ensuring uninterrupted bus operations in the NCR.
The UPSRTC currently operates approximately 13,000 to 14,300 diesel and CNG buses across the state. More than 700 electric buses are already in service across 17 municipal corporations.
