The 8.4km Greater Noida West Metro corridor advanced closer to reality on Wednesday (22 July) after the Union government’s Public Investment Board (PIB) approved the project, with the proposal now heading to the Union cabinet for final clearance, Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) officials said.
The elevated stretch, linking Sector 61 with Greater Noida West Sector 4, will feature five stations and is aimed at easing travel for Greater Noida West residents, many of whom currently depend on road transport through the crowded Gaur Chowk intersection.
Officials said the PIB’s formal minutes should arrive within a week, following which the proposal will go to the cabinet.
NMRC general manager (projects) Pradeep Yadav described the PIB meeting as successful and said the board was likely to circulate its minutes shortly. “Once we receive the minutes, the proposal will be sent to the Union cabinet for final approval,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
The PIB assesses the financial viability, funding structure, ridership estimates and cost-benefit analysis of major infrastructure projects before they reach the cabinet. Officials said no objections were raised during the meeting.
The plan is a reworked version of an earlier 18 km corridor connecting Delhi Metro’s Sector 61 station with Knowledge Park-5 via Greater Noida West.
Although the Uttar Pradesh government cleared the original alignment in 2024, the housing and urban affairs ministry held back approval pending a decision on the proposed Ghaziabad-Jewar RRTS corridor, prompting NMRC to revise its report.
Gaur City resident Deepti Singh welcomed the progress but urged authorities to start work promptly. “A large population lives in Greater Noida West and the existing public transport system is inadequate. We have heard announcements about the project earlier too, but it kept getting delayed. We hope construction starts at the earliest now,” she said.
