Uttar Pradesh has been asked to draw up a time-bound roadmap and finish every sewage treatment and pollution control project on drains feeding into the Yamuna by January 2028.
The directive appears in a status report examined last month by the Union home minister under the Centre’s Yamuna rejuvenation programme.
Accoding to the Hindustan Times, the official document puts Ghaziabad and Loni at the heart of the cleaning effort. It notes that the state’s contaminated drains substantially add to the pollution reaching the Yamuna in Delhi.
It also records the state’s persistent grievance that it does not get its full sanctioned quantity of Yamuna water from the Hathnikund Barrage.
No UP drain empties directly into the Yamuna, but five drains from Ghaziabad and Loni feed Delhi’s Shahdara drain, making up roughly 40-45 per cent of its flow. A joint survey found these five carry wastewater from 286 secondary drains, discharging about 205 MLD, with the Sahibabad drain alone contributing 101 MLD.
Among the fixes, a 68-MLD treatment plant is being built for the Sahibabad drain under AMRUT 2.0 at Rs 546.94 crore. A task force has also shut 244 unauthorised industrial units in Ghaziabad over four months.
An official said, “Similar instructions have been issued to other states concerned, including Delhi and Haryana, with Union home minister Amit Shah and the Union home secretary regularly holding virtual meetings with the chief secretaries on the issue almost every fortnight.”
