India’s data-centre electricity demand is set to grow more than eightfold from 11 terawatt in 2025 to 91 terawatt in 2035, according to a new report by BloombergNEF.

“Power usage will pick up as under-construction hyperscale capacities come online in the next 3-10 years,” the report said.

The sector is set to attract a huge amount of investments from across the global players.

Global hyperscalers Google, Amazon and Microsoft are the next-largest investor group, with $84 billion announced. About 95 per cent of all announced investment is targeting large hyperscale AI campuses.

Domestic conglomerates Adani and Reliance have committed $210 billion to data-centre development in India, accounting for 45 per cent of total announced investment.

Capacity addition

India’s live IT capacity quadrupled over the past six years to 1.7 GW. The country has 1.3 GW under construction and another 3.2 GW of projects that have secured land, power and permits needed to begin building.

As per the report, Maharashtra remains India’s dominant data centre market, accounting for 55 per cent of total live IT capacity and holding the largest pipeline of approved projects.

The state combines strong enterprise compute demand with supporting infrastructure including cloud regions, subsea cable connectivity and an established developer ecosystem.

The report finds that Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh will play critical roles in the next phase of growth as companies announce large investments in these states.
