The first working section of Chennai Metro’s phase II project is scheduled to open on 11 October, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to inaugurate the 14.6-km route.
The launch comes seven months after the stretch secured regulatory clearance.
Sources in Chennai Metro Rail said the Prime Minister’s Office has communicated the date to Chennai Metro Rail Limited. Modi is expected to open the corridor as part of his upcoming Tamil Nadu visit.
The route between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani falls under Corridor-4, or the Yellow Line, and is the first portion of the phase II network cleared for passenger services. The commissioner of Metro Railway Safety approved the section in February, after which months of groundwork followed ahead of the opening.
Commuters at Vadapalani will likely rely on a skywalk that links the new line to the existing Vadapalani metro station. Construction of entry and exit facilities at the interchange is yet to be completed.
According to a TNIE report, citing state BJP sources, Modi may also inaugurate the Vellore airport during the trip. The party plans to receive him when he arrives in Chennai for the one-day visit, but no formal party programmes have been lined up yet.
