Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has intensified work on the second phase of the Metro project, with the agency reviewing construction and other pending works as it works towards the revised August 2027 completion deadline.
Managing director G Priyanka chaired a detailed review meeting on Thursday (1 October) to take stock of progress across the Phase II corridor, which will connect Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor with SmartCity in Kakkanad.
KMRL said civil construction on the remaining portions will be taken up immediately after land acquisition on the right side of the Palarivattom and Padamugal stretches is completed.
KMRL has abandoned its earlier plan to open the corridor in partial stages and is now targeting full-corridor commissioning by August 2027.
The project, valued at Rs 1,957. 05 crore, has faced delays related to utility shifting, land acquisition and funding clearances. Recent progress includes the complete arrival of specialised steel rails for track installation, with 2,444 pieces manufactured to international standards.
The Metro operator is also working on ways to strengthen its finances once Phase II becomes operational.
Along with passenger revenue, KMRL plans to expand non-fare income through measures such as semi-naming rights for stations and other commercial initiatives.
