Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said that the newly completed infrastructure projects in Mumbai will strengthen north-south and east-west connectivity and help achieve the goal of reducing travel time across the city to 50-60 minutes.

Fadnavis made the remarks while virtually inaugurating three major flyovers, the reconstructed Sion railway overbridge in South Mumbai, the Vidyavihar railway overbridge in the eastern suburbs, and a flyover built on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) in the western suburbs.

These infrastructure projects will be important in our plan to reach from one part of Mumbai to another in 50 to 60 minutes,” Fadnavis said. He added that smoother traffic movement would improve connectivity and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

The three projects are aimed at improving east-west links, reducing commuting time and easing congestion at some of Mumbai’s busiest junctions.

The newly rebuilt Sion railway overbridge replaces the 112-year-old British-era structure that was demolished after being declared unsafe in 2019. The new bridge will also support the planned construction of the fifth and sixth railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-II).The additional railway lines are expected to improve suburban and long-distance train operations by increasing capacity and allowing more frequent services. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Sion bridge project was completed four months ahead of its February 2027 deadline.

Fadnavis said the bridge would help improve road traffic flow and enable the expansion of railway infrastructure under MUTP-II, which will eventually benefit daily commuters.

The Vidyavihar railway overbridge now connects Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg in the eastern part of the city with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg on the western side. The bridge is expected to cut travel time between the two areas from nearly 30 minutes to just 10 minutes. The chief minister said it would also reduce pressure on the existing Ghatkopar railway overbridge.

The third project, a 1.26-km flyover near Hotel Ratnagiri junction in Goregaon East, has been developed as part of the GMLR project. It connects General Arun Kumar Vaidya Marg with Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari Road near Santosh Nagar, providing a faster route between the western and eastern suburbs.

The projects are part of Mumbai’s broader infrastructure push aimed at improving mobility and reducing travel challenges in the city.
