Noida Airport: New 10-Lane Bypass To Cut Delhi-Jewar Travel Time, Divert Expressway Traffic

With commercial operations at Noida International Airport expected to begin on June 15, authorities are preparing a major road infrastructure overhaul aimed at easing congestion and improving connectivity between Delhi, Noida and Jewar. As part of the proposed plan, the embankment road running along the Yamuna River will be widened and transformed into a high-capacity bypass corridor that could eventually feature 10 lanes. Officials believe the project will help manage the sharp rise in traffic expected after the airport becomes operational.

According to a report in Times Now, the proposed corridor will start from Sector 94 in Delhi and extend to Gharbara village in Greater Noida, where it will connect directly with the Yamuna Expressway. Currently, the embankment road is four lanes wide. Under the redevelopment plan, it will first be widened to six lanes before eventually being upgraded to a 10-lane route in line with future traffic requirements. Authorities said the expansion has become necessary because of the anticipated increase in vehicular movement once flight operations begin at Noida International Airport.

The upgraded bypass route will also be integrated with the upcoming Chilla Elevated Road corridor, which is expected to play a key role in reducing traffic bottlenecks between Delhi and Noida. The 5.9-km-long elevated road, currently under construction between Mayur Vihar and Mahamaya Flyover, is likely to be completed by December next year. In addition, officials are planning another elevated connector measuring around 1.4 km between Mahamaya Flyover and the Okhla Bird Sanctuary Metro Station. Once completed, this elevated link is expected to allow vehicles travelling from Delhi to access the embankment road directly without entering the heavily congested Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.

According to Noida Authority CEO Krishna Karunesh, traffic movement in the region is expected to increase substantially after the airport begins operations, making the redevelopment of the embankment road a priority infrastructure project. Officials from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) and the irrigation department have already conducted inspections of the proposed project site. Authorities said a feasibility study will be carried out first, following which a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared for the corridor expansion

The project cost is expected to be jointly shared by the Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna authorities. The infrastructure push comes just weeks before Noida International Airport is scheduled to begin commercial flight operations on June 15.
