Odisha’s NH-53 from Chandikhole to Paradip Port is expanding to an 8-lane highway, enhancing connectivity and cargo movement at a cost of Rs 3,500 crore.
A major highway infrastructure upgrade is underway in Odisha with the expansion of National Highway-53 from Chandikhole to Paradip Port into the state’s first 8-lane highway corridor. The ambitious project, being undertaken at an estimated cost of around Rs 3,500 crore, is expected to significantly improve road connectivity, reduce travel time and strengthen cargo movement to Paradip Port.
According to a release issued by the National Highways Authority, the 77-km-long corridor will play a crucial role in improving transportation efficiency for both passenger vehicles and heavy commercial trucks operating between NH-16 and Paradip Port.
The project road passes through Jajpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts and forms a key segment of NH-53, which connects Hajira Port in Gujarat to Paradip Port in Odisha. Authorities said the widening of the existing four-lane highway into eight lanes is aimed at easing growing traffic congestion and ensuring smoother vehicular movement on the busy industrial and port corridor.
To ensure timely execution and better management, the entire project has been divided into four separate packages.
Officials said the project will substantially strengthen port connectivity and improve transportation of minerals such as iron ore, manganese and bauxite from Odisha to various parts of the country and overseas markets. The upgraded highway is expected to facilitate faster and safer movement of cargo vehicles carrying goods to and from Paradip Port, thereby improving logistics and freight efficiency.
The highway expansion is also expected to provide a boost to industrial development and marine-related business activities in the region. Improved transportation infrastructure linked to the port sector is likely to support seafood trade, industrial operations and commercial activities across eastern Odisha.
Besides enhancing economic activity, the project is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, transporters, traders and local businesses by reducing congestion and travel delays. Authorities also stated that the project would generate employment opportunities for local people during both the construction and operational phases.
