India’s infrastructure output rises 4.8% y/y in August

NEW DELHI, Sept 21 (Reuters) – India’s infrastructure output (ININFR=ECI), opens new tab grew 4.8% year-on-year in August as strong cement and electricity ​output outweighed weakness in energy-related sectors, according to government data ‌released on Monday.
This is the third data release under the new series, which uses 2022-23 as the base year and expands the ​core sector basket to include iron ore.

KEY NUMBERS

• Cement output ​rose 12.5% in August from a revised 12.7% increase in ​July.
• Steel production increased 3.4% last month, compared with a revised 1.9% growth in July.
• Electricity generation rose 11.6% in August, as ​compared with a revised 8.4% increase in July.
• Iron ​ore production rose 5.5% in August, compared with a rise of 29.5% ‌in ⁠July.
• Refinery products output rose 2.6% in August versus a revised 3% rise a month earlier.
• Coal production fell 3.8% in August, compared with a rise of 7.6% ​the prior month.
• ​Crude oil ⁠output fell 3.6% in August, compared with a fall of 5.3% in July.

Fertilizer ​production declined 12.4% in August, following an 8% ​contraction ⁠in the prior month.
• Natural gas production shrank 4.9% in August, as compared with a revised drop of 3% in ⁠July.
• ​The cumulative infrastructure output growth for ​April-August increased year-on-year to 4.3% from 2.4% in the corresponding period last ​year
