DP World has completed the latest expansion of its Posorja container terminal in Ecuador, extending the quay to 800 m and adding new cargo-handling equipment under an investment programme valued at approximately $200m.

The extension increases the terminal’s ability to handle large containerships at the country’s main deepwater container gateway, with annual capacity expected to reach 1.4m teu.

The latest announcement confirms the completion of an additional 100 m of quay since April, when DP World inaugurated a 700 m waterfront and outlined plans to extend it further before the end of the year.

The operator has also added another ship-to-shore container crane, equipped with a 72 m outreach and lifting capacity of up to 65 tonnes.

The equipment is designed to handle ships of up to 400 m in length, including vessels carrying between 20,000 and 24,000 teu.

Three additional hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes have arrived at the terminal and are expected to enter service in early 2027, following commissioning work.Once the new equipment is operational, Posorja’s fleet will comprise seven ship-to-shore cranes and 18 yard cranes.

The upgrade also includes electric terminal vehicles, additional empty-container handling equipment and an approximately 50% increase in refrigerated container power connections.DP World said the new hybrid yard cranes are expected to cut diesel consumption by around 40% compared with conventional equipment.

The latest announcement values the wider private investment programme at approximately $200m. DP World had previously put the programme at $190m when it inaugurated the earlier phase in April.

Posorja was developed under a 50-year concession awarded to DP World in 2016. The terminal has since become an important gateway for Ecuador’s agricultural and refrigerated exports, competing for larger vessels and direct international services.
