Indian Railways has approved a Rs 163 crore project to modernise the electric traction system on the Parbhani–Mudkhed double-line section in the Nanded Division of South Central Railway.
The sanctioned project will upgrade the existing 1×25 kV traction system to the more advanced 2×25 kV configuration across 164 track km, alongside the installation of associated power supply infrastructure.
The Parbhani–Mudkhed stretch forms part of the strategically important Highly Utilised Network (HUN) Route-9, which links Ajmer, Indore, Khandwa, Akola, Purna, Mudkhed, Secunderabad, Mahbubnagar and Dhone.
As one of Indian Railways’ critical high-density corridors, the route plays an important role in handling both freight and long-distance passenger traffic.
The investment also aligns with Indian Railways’ broader strategy to expand freight capacity across its network as it works towards the national target of transporting 3,000 million tonnes of freight annually by 2029-30.
Upgrading traction infrastructure on heavily utilised routes is considered a key part of improving operational efficiency, reducing bottlenecks and enabling higher train throughput.
