The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved two more semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), the country’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display facility based on Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, and a semiconductor packaging unit. Both facilities will come up in Gujarat.

Synopsis

India is set to boost its semiconductor manufacturing. The Union Cabinet has approved two new units, Crystal Matrix Limited and Suchi Semicon, with an investment of over Rs 3,900 crore. Crystal Matrix will produce advanced display components. These projects are part of India’s growing semiconductor pipeline. Several semiconductor plants are expected to be ready by 2026 and 2027.

The two approved units, Crystal Matrix Limited (CML) and Suchi Semicon Private Limited (SSPL), will together draw a cumulative investment of around Rs 3,936 crore and are expected to generate employment for 2,230 skilled professionals.

Crystal Matrix Limited will set up an integrated compound semiconductor fabrication and ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) facility at Dholera, Gujarat. The facility will manufacture Mini/Micro-LED display modules and also provide GaN foundry services, including epitaxy on 6-inch wafers. Its annual production capacity will be 72,000 square metres of Mini/Micro-LED display panels and 24,000 sets of RGB GaN epitaxy wafers. Products from the unit will find applications in large TV and  ..

Suchi Semicon Private Limited will establish an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Surat, Gujarat, for manufacturing discrete semiconductors. The unit will have a production capacity of 1,033.20 million chips per annum. Its target applications include power electronics, analog ICs and industrial systems, serving end markets such as automotive, industrial automation and consumer electronics.
