Delhi International Airport reopened its third runway for operations today (20 September), almost seven months after it was shut for major strengthening and rehabilitation works.
The comprehensive upgrade of Runway 11R/29L is complete, with all necessary regulatory approvals now in place, private airport operator DIAL said.
The rehabilitation project, which commenced in February this year, involved extensive strengthening and upgrade works aimed at enhancing operational safety, efficiency, resilience and long-term capacity at one of India’s busiest aviation gateways.
DIAL is a joint venture between infrastructure major GMR group-led consortium and national airports operator, the Airports Authority of India.
As part of the rehabilitation programme, DIAL completed major airside infrastructure enhancements, including runway resurfacing, permanent threshold displacement of runway 29L, and construction of a new Rapid Exit Taxiway.
The upgraded runway underwent all required inspections, validations and regulatory clearances before being deemed ready for operational use.
These enhancements are expected to improve runway efficiency, optimise aircraft movement, reduce runway occupancy time and further strengthen operational reliability during varying weather conditions.
DIAL CEO Pradeep Panicker described the recommissioning as an important milestone in Delhi Airport’s continued journey towards building future-ready aviation infrastructure.
The upgraded runway, along with the new Rapid Exit Taxiway and enhanced navigation and lighting systems, will further strengthen Delhi Airport’s capacity and resilience while supporting the growing aviation needs of the country, he said.
