Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari today laid the foundation stone for highway projects worth Rs 3,214 crore at the North East Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition in New Shillong, Meghalaya.

The package includes the foundation stone laying of four new National Highway projects and the upgradation of two key road corridors, aimed at improving connectivity across the state and strengthening links with neighbouring regions.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who joined Gadkari at the summit, described the event as a milestone for the region’s development journey.

Highlighting Meghalaya’s progress, he said the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has risen from Rs 29,508 crore in 2018 to Rs 59,626 crore in FY 2024-25, making it one of India’s fastest-growing states.

He also pointed to rising public investment, with state budgets doubling and capital expenditure increasing nearly six-fold over the past eight years.

Sangma further underlined Meghalaya’s growing ambitions, citing preparations for the upcoming National Games, plans for a major football stadium, and improved air connectivity to Shillong.

Key Projects Included In The Package

  • Pynursla Bypass (NH-206): 7.76 km stretch with an investment of Rs 564 crore.
    • Selsella–Goeragre Road (NH-206): 31.7 km highway project valued at Rs 504 crore.
    • Tura Bypass (NH-217): 29 km access-controlled route estimated at Rs 951 crore.

    Road Improvement Works

    • Upgradation of a 10.67 km section of Shillong–Dawki Road at a cost of Rs 351 crore.
    • Improvement of the 5.44 km Jowai Bypass with an investment of Rs 106 crore.
