The Tamil Nadu government has issued an order for a five-year urban infrastructure programme with an estimated outlay of Rs 1.50 lakh crore.

The programme will focus on upgrading roads, sewage systems and drinking water supply across urban local bodies in the state.

Urban roads and transport account for the largest share of the proposed investment, with Rs 60,000 crore earmarked for the sector.

Sewage infrastructure will receive Rs 50,000 crore, while drinking water projects have been allocated Rs 30,350 crore. Another Rs 3,000 crore has been set aside for solid waste management.

The programme also provides Rs 2,000 crore each for waterbody restoration and social infrastructure. Green space development and public health initiatives will receive Rs 1,500 crore apiece.

Environmental works include the planting of five crore saplings and the restoration of waterbodies, including the Adyar and Cooum rivers.

The programme also sets targets for household water connections, sewage coverage, urban mobility, waste management and ecological restoration.

The order lays down the sector-wise allocation of funds and service targets for the five-year initiative, bringing a range of civic infrastructure and environmental projects under a common investment framework.

The Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TUFIDCO) will oversee programme implementation and financial management.

Other proposed measures include setting up animal sterilisation centres and installing artificial intelligence-enabled CCTV cameras.
